Home and away with the National Theatre of Scotland

Today, tickets went on sale for the National Theatre of Scotland’s exciting new project, Home Away 2016. In autumn 2016, ten theatre companies from around the world will come together to present a series of productions telling stories from their location. Some weeks ago, Jack (my loyal dog-come-photography assistant) and I packed my camera and headed out to five of these locations across Scotland, to create portraits of some of the participants in the productions.

Ten years of the National Theatre of Scotland

National Theatre of Scotland. Home. Dundee

Ten years ago last month marks a decade since the National Theatre of Scotland nailed their colours to the mast and declared themselves open. Rather than choose one production in one location, they created HOME – a series of plays taking place in one weekend across Scotland. I was lucky enough to be invited on board, to capture five of their nine events in one weekend.

Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour

Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour

I was in Glasgow the other week working with the National theatre of Scotland on press and marketing shots for Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour during rehearsal. This is Vicky Featherstone’s first return to the NTS after taking up her post at the Royal Court, London. I could see that this raucous new play, written by Lee Hall, was a great show, now the world premiere is at Edinburgh Festival, already a sell out, with this incredibly talented group of actors receiving excellent reviews.

Dear Scotland. The National Theatre of Scotland at the Portrait Gallery

I have just photographed the National Theatre of Scotland’s new production Dear Scotland which is here in Edinburgh at the National Portrait Gallery.  20 writers have given voice to 20 portraits exploring their possible thoughts on the forthcoming referendum and Scottish independance.  Each monologue is delivered by some of our finest actors.  For me what works so well is not only the rare chance to have a very intimate performance with the actors, but also how they bring each portrait to life.  It is also a treat to see the Portrait Gallery after hours.

I can only recommend if you have the time and there are tickets left you should go.

Vintage Cabaret at Summerhall

This morning I spent a frantic hour or so with Vintage Cabaret Les Amis d’Onno Equine who have a show in the Demonstration Room at Summerhall, next to my studio.  In a space only a little bit bigger than my front room they have a concocted a show with two big horses, a couple of dogs, girls spinning on wheels whilst knives get thrown at them, all in a very debonair fashion.  Many thanks to my niece Cora and brother Thom who not only helped with my lights but managed to conduct an interview for his website, All Edinburgh Theatre.  Vintage Cabaret Les Amis d’Onno Equine in the Demonstration Room at Summerhall, Edinburgh by Peter Dibdin Photographer
